Consultations
KSI’s most important function is to offer services to all levels of athletics and affiliated personnel (athletic trainers, team physicians, athletic directors, league supervisors, athletes, coaches, parents, principals, etc.) with regard to creating, altering, and or approving the current site-specific emergency action plans for preventing sudden death in sport, especially exertional heat stroke.
We will go to individual organizations to provide assistance, serve as a consultant as they institute changes and guide them through the process, from policy to implementation, refinement, and then evaluation.
Advocacy
We work with the governing bodies of sport organizations and state medical boards, among others, to campaign for the creation or improvement of existing policies as they relate to the prevention of sudden death in sport, especially as it relates to exertional heat stroke.
Education
The Institute offers the most comprehensive database of current information related to the prevention of sudden death in sport, especially as it relates to exertional heat stroke, as well as on-site seminars at the University of Connecticut.
Additionally, we will go to specific settings to present talks and educate groups. We are developing a web-based CEU program for many different organizations and professionals, including athletic trainers, emergency medical technicians, team physicians, and coaches. We will also be developing a program to review and approve curricula used by individual states as part of their required health and safety seminars for coaches.
Research
We will build on our 20 years of research related to sudden death in sports and exertional heat stroke, and will continue using multiple research approaches, including quantitative and qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches to further our goals. Our research will range from basic science to applied, clinical and educational sciences.
Mass-market Outreach
We will reach out with a blend of traditional and social media to educate the public on the prevention of sudden death in sport, especially as it relates to exertional heat stroke and heat illnesses. We plan to deliver this message through multiple channels including advertising, public service announcements, podcasts, CD ROMs, webinars, conferences as well as pitching stories to reporters and talk shows at the regional and national levels.
